To face the opening of a grooming saloon nowadays, with the best equipment, requires the acquisition of premises in strategic positions and the purchase of technologically suitable equipment; the knowledge of the grooming techniques at a good level isn't enough to assure the success of the business, but there's also the need of some other notions:
• knowledge of laws and set of rules in force
• accounting
• advertising
• management and organisation
• relations with customers
It's sure that “Well begun is half done”, so we intend to follow step by step those who will require it, by giving them all the necessary information so that the future business will be able to give a high level service, in a good "atmosphere" and with good profits.
The atmosphere of the working milieu must be relaxed and quiet (for what can be possible when you are doing a shampoo to a four-legged customer that feels itself abandoned to its lot of clean-dog), because if the working milieu is comfortable, the whole duties can be performed in the best way, and this will be greatly appreciated by the dog's owners who will entrust their animals to you with much pleasure.
OK! OK! , all the information regarding the opening of the new business are good, and even the advices for the best choice of the suitable equipment, technologically modern and fit for the milieu that you are going to equip, but one could ask:

1) Decide to work on one's own
Decide to open a trade on one's own is a very important step. The initial investment to equip in the best way a modern grooming saloon can be from 10 to 15 millions (£).
The possibility of paying by instalments from 6 to 36 months offered by PELOMAGIA s.r.l. together with the Banca Commerciale Italiana, eliminates the financial risks which one must face when opening a new trade.
The interests on this financing, exclusively for our customers, is 5% yearly.
As an example, the instalment for a sum of 10 millions repayable in 36 months is £ 320.000 (all inclusive).

3) Becoming a groomer, the why of a secure and reliable business
Business originate from the necessity to satisfy some needs. In the past to satisfy one need was enough to open a trade; today too, even if in a different way, the identification of a certain need is the premise to open a new trade.
It is estimated that the 48% of italian families have a four-legged friend.
The animal which lives in our houses is a real friend to us, and also an irreplaceable psychological support.
The domestic animals are more than ever present in our houses.
For this reason we feel the real need of appropriate both sanitary and aesthetic cares for them, the first for their living together with men, the second to maintain the characteristics of their breed.
Nowadays the animals which are part of a family unit are normally sociable, they are monthly or even weekly taken to the Groomer, their appearance is always neat and fashionable, showing tufts, fringes and pon-pons, everything in the right place; also the most "Spartan" dogs, which keep watch over our houses and gardens, take periodically advantage of the grooming services.
The aesthetic cares that each owner desires for his dog, are fully satisfied by the groomers who, while choosing the equipment more suitable for a qualified activity, have chosen as a partner the Pelomagia s.r.l. society.

4) The seat
The location of the grooming saloon where to run your activity is very important, the ground floor is to prefer because it is incomfortable for the owners to get their dog on the stairs or lifts (even the elderly persons often don't like lifts).
It is better to lease than to buy; in this last case you'll be free to modify anything you need only when the loan is completely paid off, in case of loan it is necessary to know which interventions are allowed by the location contract.
It is better to choose premises with ample glass windows,which can be properly brought out to advertise the activity free.
It's to be preferred the presence of a large parking area on streets of transition, easy to find; the town centre is not suitable.
If you own a premise near or inside your house which could become suitable with some modifications, it's better to examinate this possibility before loaning in another place. 20 square metres are enough, but using our equipment even smaller premises can suffice. We have equipped grooming saloons which do their activities of washing and shearing in only 10 square metres.
The low provides washable walls or tiled until the height of 200 cm, a drain well at the middle of the floor for white waters, and accident-prevention finishings as stated in the 626 law.
You must also consider an independent waiting room where to receive the customers.

5) The placing of the grooming room
The Grooming saloon must be fit out to be both elegant and functional, thus enabling the peak productivity and an effective organization of the spaces.
In order to decide the placing of the outfits and working-stations, you must take into account the comfort during the activity and the mass of work in the most busy days.
If your shop is presented in the right way and furnished with technologically modern equipment, it will surely appeal the customers who will be willing to utilize your services.
The perfect milieu depends on different factors: equipment, fitting, various accessories, lighting, heating, ventilation, noises, and of course method of working and interpersonal relations.

6) Hygiene and neatness
The use of towels to dry dog is an out-of-date method; the groomers had a certain number of towels at their disposal with a certain cost for the frequent passages in the washing-machine, and without considering the unhealthy smells which often spread out and the occupied space.
Since 40/50 years ago the dogs were introduced in boxes full of sawdust to rinse and dry them, the introduction of towels has been a useful innovation; another important innovation was the utilisation of dryers with resistors (3.500/4.000 Watt of consumption). Since then there haven't been technological developments, but only aesthetic ones and those means are still on the market.
Those who were groomers in the past know well the problem, and there are still groomers today who keep on working with out-of-date methods; we believe that their way of working is an auspice of success for those who want to begin the trade today and who have the opportunity to equip themselves with our machines which are considered useful, cheap and in the van.
In the 90° we have tested and improved our washing and drying systems directly in the grooming saloons.
When we went to take back our prototypal equipment after 10 days, a person of the staff who washed and dried animals, threatened (playfully) to resign if the saloon wasn't then equipped with our systems.
We don't know if he did, but this was a confirmation for us that our way was the right one.
Today there's no more need of towels and dryers with resistors thanks to the Pelomagia s.r.l. systems, patented in Italy and abroad, which aspirate in a few minutes water and dead parasites from the mantle of the dog after the rinsing and which complete the drying, in a few minutes, with hot air.
With the Pelomagia s.r.l. equipment the drying times are reduced of the 50% and the energetic consumption is reduced of the 75%.
At the end of the working day the room must be cleaned with water and suitable detergents, being careful to show off only products which are necessary to work.
Our patented systems have some advantages: they don't heat further the milieu in the summertime, they don't create ozone which is noxious for our organism, and they purify at the same time the air that we breathe while working.
Do you know how many millions of dirty particles are present in the air?

If you can choose, it's better to prefer a working milieu technologically modern and healthy.
A too high humidity rate is a clear sign of inadequacy of the ventilation system and it can cause tiredness, irritability, headache and giddinesses, and it helps the concentration of bacteriums in the air.
If you turn on the motorized washing tub or the Compact system 3 for some minutes in the morning, the air in the grooming saloon will become pleasantly perfumed and perfectly breathable for you and your customers.
All the characteristics of our machines become indispensable: short drying times, reduced electric consumption,stillness, elimination of the acoustic pollution, cleansing of the air.

7) Relation with customers
To understand the importance of the relation with the customer means trying to put him at ease, making him feel our desire to satisfy his demands taking into account his personality.
Luckily the majority of customers hasn't got difficult demands to satisfy.
But there's always a minority which is more difficult to content and that easily shows its dissatisfaction.
It's fundamental for the customer the first impression when he asks for information at the first visit to the saloon, when he arranges the first appointment.
So the answers must be convincing, he must feel to have applied to the right persons who communicate him efficiency and excitement.
If the request for information is made by phone, the impression which the customer receives will depend exclusively on the tone of the voice, the way of talking and the clearness of the answerer.
When the customer enters the saloon, it's better to serve him immediately, or at least greet and receive him; a smile and a few words (good morning, good afternoon, I'll be there in two minutes) are enough if you don't want him to feel ignored and disregarded.
The customer should not wait too long, and if it's necessary to wait, he must feel at ease and treated with politeness and warmth.
Each customer should feel that his decision to apply to you is appreciated, because (it's never enough to repeat it) the fundamental goal for the groomer is to behave in a way to "please the customer", giving a qualified service on a professional and even human and personal plane.
When the dog is consigned, properly settled, and the customer is satisfied of the results, the service is not ended: Who spent a certain sum of money for the health and care of his dog, appreciates favourable remarks.
When the customer has crossed the door (politely kept open), the service is ended off.
The realisation of a table with a list of the stages to apply in the behaviour towards the customer from his arrive to his going out, compared with what happens in the reality, can help you to see how things stand as regarding the service which a customer can have in your saloon, and you'll know where to intervene to better the quality.

8) Advertising
The verbal and visual content of an advertisement must be organized in a way to arouse in the customer the desire of knowing more and to point out all the advantages that he will have from the fruition of the service.
The important is not to promise what it's not possible to carry out.
It's however certain that someone finds an advertisement interesting, while someone else finds it quite disagreeable.
To present himself with a unique and individual advertising image helps to stand out the mass.
The utilisation of technologically modern equipment allows to reach better results in the quality of your activity, with the consequent passing the word on among the customers and those who still don't know you.
The best advertising and the cheapest one is made "mouth to mouth", the set of communications personal and spontaneous with which one or more customers advice the product or the service that they use.
Only the satisfied customer will recommend you to the friend, the neighbour or the relatives.
Today there's the custom of using aggressive advertisements to enlarge the business, but as regards the Professionist groomers, we prefer the personal recommendation as a promotional means.
The groomers with their bad or good manner make bad or good publicity to their activity, they can confirm with the real example their abilities and what people hears of them, or they can arouse doubts which the customers can have.
The external appearance of the shop-windows is a part of the advertising campaign, but they should not be excessively elegant and sofisticated, or too much careless and decadent; in the first case some could think to high prices, in the second case they could think that neatness and quality of service leave much to be desired.
It's astonishing that the groomers in general are not able to exploit this free advertising space.
The general appearance of the grooming saloon and its windows should invite the customers to enter.
The internal part of the saloon continues the advertising:order, neatness, temperature, fresh fragrance, liking and politeness of those who works there, confirm or contradict the impression which the customer had from the outside.

9) Insurance
Paying an insurance policy doesn’t bring any real benefit, but a sense of calm and safety. With the passing of time we realise to have paid a substantial sum of money, and often without having suffered the damages which the policy covers.
Obviously and luckily those who insure themselves against fire are not all struck by it, but those who are will bless the moment of their decision to insure themselves.
When you choose among the numerous insurance policies offered by the market, you shouldn’t think if you have the possibility to insure, but if you can afford the risk of not having an insurance.
You must know perfectly the limits of your policy. In particular you have to pay attention to the exceptions that regard your activity; don’t believe to the policies which cover any kind of risks, but read attentively all the clauses.
It’s important and advisable that the insurance company pay for the damages that you can cause to others during the carrying out of your job ( except fraudulent facts).
It’s better to have also a personal accident insurance, which assure a daily allowance in case of any kind of accident which enables you to run your activity.
For other kinds of policy, you can apply your insurance agent, but remember that his interests are not always the same as yours.

10) Management, production costs, general cost and profit
To calculate the price to the public for a service of washing and grooming and to determine his margin of profit, the owner of a grooming saloon must take into account two fundamental items:
1) PRODUCTION COSTS
We consider production costs all the expenses for:
- material for daily use; gas or electricity to heat water and which are necessary for the fittings for the washing and drying of animals; as regards the shearing, we need heads for the clippers of various measures and which need to be sharpened, scissors, combs, brushes, all objects which must be used while working on animals daily.
2) GENERAL EXPENSES
We consider general expenses all the followings:
- rent
- lighting
- heating
- phone
- cleaning of the premises
- advertising
All the expenses which are not directly connected with a precise operation, must be listed as general expenses and not as production costs.
• How to do it? It’s easy:
Just read the embossed plate which is compulsorily applied on each machine and which reports the electric consumption in KiloWatt. 1KW= 1.000 Watt per hour.
